Buy Local or Bye Bye Local

Buy Local or Bye Bye Local

One day a year we celebrate Small Business Saturday but the truth of the matter is that local merchants, local artisans and our community need us 365 days a year. I have always been an advocate of shopping small and local but, for a while, I lost my way and was no longer walking the walk.

One day a year we celebrate Small Business Saturday but the truth of the matter is that local merchants, local artisans and our community need us 365 days a year. I have always been an advocate of shopping small and local but, for a while, I lost my way and was no longer walking the walk.

I spent some time on the Downtown Mall today and was disheartened to see how few people there were.

I get it ... I truly do. One click shopping is so easy. Not only can you find almost anything but two short days later the package is on your front porch. It's so easy to get sucked in — I know I did. It started with college textbooks and before I knew it anything we needed went into the infamous shopping cart. It became a nasty habit.

NO MORE! This year I quit cold turkey. I did not renew my annual membership. I vowed to do all of my shopping in our community, not only for the holidays but all year long. And guess what? It is so much more enjoyable! It may take a little more of my time but I get to enjoy speaking to the associate and/or owner and often other customers.

The next time you need to shop ... please consider stepping away from the computer!
